About Garett Gabriel
"Like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted untill progress began to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher standard of living is worth it's cost in things natural, wild and free" Aldo Leopold

My name is Garett Gabriel I'm an avid outdoorsman and naturalist currently residing in South Central Kansas. Since the age of 14 I had a passion to become an adventure photographer and travel the United States documenting wildlife in their natural habitat. I was born and raised in North East Pennsylvania so being in the woods and learning about wildlife was second nature to me. In recent years I have been taking steps toward complementing my work with a more "photojournalistic" approach. Studying, learning, upgrading equipment and putting my skills to the test, you can never stop learning and bettering yourself. I want to be continually challenged to take my work to the next level!
I've been immersed in photography for over 20 years. When I was 14 my father gave me my 1st real camera, it was an old Canon AE-1 with 3 different lenses, a bag and a flash. I remember trying to read up on and figure out all the meters, manual camera settings, manual lens settings, film .. etc etc and try to get a good shot of something ..... anything. In a day when there was no digital, no computer work, no software processing / enhancing, no special effects and "real" film I got quite an education. My very first picture was of a whitetail deer……… it didn’t exactly turn out to look like a deer but trust me it was. I kept working on it but I was no National Geographic photographer that’s for sure. I was more like a photographer for “Mystery Animal Magazine” … guess what the distorted, blurred, over or under exposed animal in the picture is and win a huge prize!!
I served in the Armed forces from 1985 to 1990, then again in the later part of 1990 to mid 1991 where I served in Operation Desert Storm. I joined the service to pay for college and left home only 4 days after graduation. I served in the Army as an intelligence Specialist then cross trained to the Infantry during my last remaining 1 1/2 years. I can say I enjoyed the Infantry better on account of the adventure and amount of time spent outdoors. During training (and after) I got to go through wilderness survival training, desert survival training and much more which I feel was a great life experience! I got to climb mountains, repel from cliffs & helicopters, run zip lines, compete in orienteering and live for months at a time "in the bush".

Recent Years
Over the last 7 years I did a lot of filming, photography and outdoor writing for various outdoor sport organizations and programs. It has been a wonderful experience and one that I still enjoy today. Filming and photographing professional hunters is more challenging than one thinks. Lugging gear in all types of weather and terrain, 13 to 15 hour days, crossing creeks, scaling banks and climbing trees with thousands of dollars of equipment is sometimes nerve racking and always physically demanding. I found that filming an outdoor show from 13 to 15 ft in a tree is quite an experience especially when the wind is blowing! It has been a great experience for me and allowed me to publish many outdoor articles, fine tune my photography & videography skills and learn a great deal more about linier / non linier HD video editing as well as processing & developing still shots. I hope to continue to work with the folks that have given me this opportunity as well as develop new relationships along the way.
